What is Cramly?

Cramly (cramly.study) is a free spaced repetition study tool for IB and AP Biology students. It helps students retain course content over time by showing them cards at the right moment for review.

Who looks after your data?

Cramly is run by an independent teacher. You can contact us about your data at any time using the details in the Contact section below.

What data do we collect?

You can create an account in one of two ways:

  • With Google: we receive your name, email address and Google profile picture (if Google provides one).
  • With an email address and password: we store your email address and a display name, which starts as the part of your email before the @. Your password is stored only in hashed (scrambled) form, so nobody, including us, can read it.

As you use Cramly, we store:

  • Your study progress: which cards you've reviewed, how you rated them and when they are next due
  • Your streaks, points and activity history, including how many cards you reviewed on each day
  • Your course choice (IB or AP), course level (SL or HL) and in-app preferences such as your mascot's name
  • Cards you create yourself, including the text, any images and any voice recordings you add
  • Cards you star, so you can find them again
  • If you join a teacher's class with a class code, the link between your account and that teacher

How do we use your data?

Your data is used only to:

  • Schedule your reviews with our spaced repetition algorithm, so you see the right cards at the right time
  • Track your progress, streaks and points
  • Let a teacher you have joined see your progress and activity
  • Show your display name and score on the Recall game leaderboard, if you play it
  • Show a deck you have chosen to share, along with the name it is shared under

What other people can see

Some features are visible beyond your own account. You choose whether to use them:

  • Recall leaderboard: your display name and score are visible to anyone who opens the leaderboard.
  • Shared decks: anyone with the link to a deck you share can see its cards and the name it is shared under.
  • Teachers: a teacher you have joined can see your progress and activity. Nobody else can.
  • Images and voice recordings you upload: these are private to you. They are not included in shared decks, and teachers cannot see them.

What we don't do

  • We do not sell your data to anyone
  • We do not share your data with third parties for their own purposes
  • We do not show advertisements
  • We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, or third-party analytics

Who processes your data for us?

We use these service providers to run Cramly. They process data only on our instructions to provide the service:

  • Supabase: our database, file storage (images and audio) and account system
  • Google: sign-in with your Google account (OAuth 2.0). We never see or store your Google password.
  • Vercel: hosts the Cramly website

Our database and uploaded files are stored in Switzerland (Supabase's Zurich region). The EU and UK both recognise Switzerland as giving personal data an adequate level of protection. Where any of our providers processes data outside the UK or European Economic Area, it does so under the standard contractual clauses or an equivalent safeguard.

How long do we keep your data?

We keep your data for as long as your account is in use. If you have not used Cramly for six months, your account and its data are deleted automatically. You can also delete your account at any time, as described below.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • correct data that is wrong
  • delete your account and your data
  • stop or restrict how we use your data

If you are in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office, ico.org.uk).

Deleting your data

You can delete your account at any time from your Profile page in the app. This permanently removes:

  • your profile and sign-in account
  • your study progress and activity history
  • your starred cards and any cards you created, including images and audio
  • your Recall leaderboard entry and any decks you shared

If you cannot sign in to delete your account, email us and we will remove your data.

Children's privacy

Cramly is designed for secondary school students. We collect only the data we need to provide the service, and we do not require students to share anything beyond what is listed above. Schools that want a data processing agreement or further information can contact us.

Changes to this policy

If we make changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will say so in the app.
